Ingredient Notes and Variations

  1. White sugar is one of the most common sweetening agents in baking. You can use other sweeteners like brown sugar for a distinctive flavor profile.
  2. Vegetable oil: The oil keeps the cupcake moist and tender. You can use different oils like canola, coconut, or almond oil as a substitute.
  3. Dark cocoa powder: It adds a deep chocolate flavor to the treat. You can use regular cocoa powder instead to keep the texture less intense.
  4. Whole milk: It adds richness and creates a moist texture. You can add low-fat or non-dairy products like almond milk as an alternative.
  5. Chocolate chips: They are optional. You can skip chocolate chips or can use peanut butter as an alternative.
