Why would you like this recipe?

The main reason! It is easy to make. You need just 10 minutes of prep time to prepare the chicken the way you prefer it. You can also prepare it ahead of time, freeze it, and then prepare it at a time suitable to you. Convenient isn’t it?

Flavors are another reason to love it. Who doesn’t love a creamy, cheesy casserole with succulent and juicy chicken with a twist of caramelized onions? It’s the comfort food we all sometimes crave for!

Got some picky eaters at home? a good way to feed them their veggie is to incorporate them in this casserole, they will gulp it down in no time! Another reason to cook this meal tonight!

Ingredients, Twists and Variations:

Chicken: I usually make this meal when I don’t have much prep time, so I use store-bought rotisserie chicken. But if you prefer cooking your chicken yourself, you can grill the chicken breast in a grill pan or simply bake it.

Mayonnaise: This forms the creamy and somehow tangy base of the casserole. You can use a low-fat or eggless mayonnaise as per your preference. If you don’t have some, swap mayonnaise with some Greek yogurt or cream cheese.

Heavy cream: Heavy cream makes the chicken casserole hearty and holds all the ingredients together! If it is adding to the caloric count, you can skip it or add hung curd to the recipe.

Sour cream: it is my favorite ingredient in the casserole because sour cream lends the tanginess the casserole just needs.

Caramelized onions: The star ingredient of today’s recipe. I use a small amount of butter and sugar to caramelize the onions, and they end up having the same French flavor we taste in restaurant-style meals.

Cheese: You can add any of your favorite cheese to the dish. Swiss cheese or cheddar cheese slices make the casserole richer and creamier, but parmesan works wonders too. Goat cheese and feta cheese will also lend a smooth silky texture and milky flavor to the dish.

Vegetables: My favorite ones are the green beans, and I add them for their vibrant color and the crunch they lend to the casserole. You can add sweet corn, olives, zucchini, bell peppers, or anything you like. Spinach will make a great addition too!

Biscuit dough: Wondering what we need biscuit dough for? It makes a nice, golden, and crunchy topping to the casserole, making it a perfect party-style casserole. I use prepared Grand’s biscuit dough for a quick prep.

Herbs: Sage, rosemary, thyme, or basil’ Use any aromatic herbs to give a flavorful twist to the creamy chili casserole.

Salt and Pepper: The usual combination is Kosher salt and Black pepper, but if you want to make it on the spicier side, add some chopped jalapenos or use cayenne pepper. Smoked paprika will give the casserole a smoky flavor.

Notes: You can vary the recipe as per your taste and try to experiment with different ingredients too.

Try incorporating some Cream of chicken soup while mixing the chicken. It will give it a nice, creamy flavor and smooth texture.

Try replacing caramelized onions with french-fried onions. This not only gives a unique twist to the recipe but also makes it closer to the classic French Onion Soup.

Tools Required

Nothing much is required though, you need to have a 9 x 33-inch baking dish. If you have a large family, you can prepare two casseroles of similar size.

How to make French Onion Chicken Casserole?

Step one: Prepare the chicken

Note: If you want to use store-bought prepared chicken, skip this step and move on to the next one.

Wash and pat dry the chicken breast fillet. Sprinkle a bit of salt and black pepper. Heat a grill pan and grill the chicken until cooked from both sides. You can also bake it at 180 degrees Celsius in an oven.

When the chicken is cooled down, cut it into cubes.

Step two: Setting the casserole

Now we need to assemble all the elements of the recipe. First of all, grease your baking dish and set aside.

In a mixing bowl, mix the cooked chicken with mayonnaise, sour cream, and heavy cream. Mix well so that the chicken gets thoroughly coated in the creamy mixture. Add herbs, salt, pepper, and any other spices you wish to add. Give it a good mix.

Spread the chicken layer in the casserole. Next, assemble the vegetables. Mix in the green beans and any other vegetables you like to add with caramelized onions.

Spread the vegetable mix on top of the chicken layer.

Step three: Initial round of baking

Now, you need to bake the casserole. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius or 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bake for 30 minutes and then remove from the oven.

Step four: Final layer

When the chicken is baked, set the top layer. Use slices or shredded cheese and top up with the cut biscuit dough. You can garnish a bit of oregano or herbs to make the casserole aromatic or flavorful.

Bake again for 8 to 10 minutes or until you see a nice golden top.

Remove from the oven, and garnish with chopped parsley and olives.

Tips and Recommendations

  • Since it is my comfort food and a make-ahead meal, I usually incorporate a lot of swaps and substitutes. So in case you don’t find a sour cream, you can make some at home by adding 1 tsp lemon juice to the heavy cream. Add some onion soup powder mix to give the perfect recipe flavor.
  • Once I tried adding balsamic vinegar to deglaze the pan while caramelizing the onion. This enhances the flavor. You can also try adding white vinegar or a bit of lemon juice.
  • If you want to bake this straight from the freezer, add at least 10 minutes to the baking time.

Storage Instruction

If you have correctly followed the recipe, I am sure you will not have any leftovers to worry about with the storage!

But if there are some, you can place the casserole in an airtight box and refrigerate it. It might lose some of its freshness, but it will remain good to eat for at least 3 days.

Since this casserole has a cheese layer, it won’t freeze well and will come out with an altered texture. So I recommend not to freeze it. If there is something coming up, you can freeze the casserole after baking it without the cheese layer. Remember to cool down the casserole thoroughly.

When you need to serve, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight. Layer it with cheese and biscuit dough and bake for 10 minutes. It will come out as fresh as the first day baked.

What goes well with French Onion Chicken Casserole?
